Good thing Duke knocked off Kentucky, because the other teams in action were not impressive. Virginia gets a certain exemption because of their injuries: if they had a healthy Jontel Evans (he did play for three minutes) and Malcolm Brogdon to go with Justin Anderson and Joe Harris, their defense would probably be exceptional.

Right now, they're just trying to get by until they are healthier, so losing to Delaware, while not good, is understandable, although the Hens are ecstatic: it's their first win over an ACC team in 50 years.

But Miami's loss to Florida Gulf Coast is just...what? Disappointing? Unseemly? Shocking?

Well not after the exhibition loss to St. Leo's.

Miami also has some players missing: Durand Scott is suspended for one more game for an NCAA issue, and Garrius Adams is injured.

But they still have Shane Larkin, Bishop Daniels, Trey McKinney Jones and Rion Brown, and that should be enough to beat FGCU.

It should have been enough to get Reggie Johnson a better performance than shooting 2-8. Kenny Kadji should have managed better than 4-10.

We're not saying anything bad about FGCU; those guys obviously played their hearts out and got the biggest win in school history. That's sensational.

But Miami had every advantage in this game and couldn't beat an Atlantic Sun team. They're in a league with Lipscomb, Kennesaw State and USC Upstate. Come on.

On the other hand, Jim Larranaga was not surprised. Afterwards he said this: "It's kind of what we expected. We haven't been defending very well and a couple of guys on the team need to shoot the ball well for us to open things up inside."

Florida Gulf Coast, just in their second season of being eligible for the NCAA tournament, visits Duke next. They'll certainly have the full attention of everyone after a win like this.

Only one game on Wednesday as the Blue Hose visit Hotlanta and Georgia Tech's fancy new digs. We'd be pleased to think Tech would win, but given the way things have gone lately, we're not betting the rent money on it.

"I get excited enough about basketball season as it is, but this Guide has been on my screen for weeks now and I'm more excited than ever. Not just about Duke, but the whole league. There are some truly unique and remarkable stats in this book, enough to make you just itch for the games to begin and see how the players do this year. I think my favorite article is the one on athletes and social media, though. I've read it three times already! Great photos, great writing, and lots of both. This is essential. "
"If you haven't purchased the Fan's Guide yet, what are you waiting for? It contains marvelous old-school content in a new-school format." Jerry K.
"Thanks a lot! The guide looks fantastic! I am really excited to dig in." Rick W
"Wow, huge piece of work! Congratulations. You guys never fail to provide the best a fan could ask for." Bill C.
