ACC Roundup!

We normally don't spend a lot of time talking about football that doesn't involve Duke, but UNC racked up 50 points on Saturday - and lost by 18. That's insane. We didn't really expect it out of Georgia Tech, as the Yellowjackets have struggled a lot this year. But there it is: amazing.

Okay, back to basketball. The only game on Saturday was Virginia Tech hosting ETSU. Unbeknownst to many ACC fans, ETSU is a passionate basketball school with a meaningful tradition and a sense that they should be, or at least can be, a tough out. We thought there was at least a chance they might come over the mountains and give the Hokies some trouble.

Nope.

James Johnson got his tenure off to a good start, beating the Buccaneers 80-62.

Given Tech's depth issues, the first thing we scanned was minutes.  Tech went eight deep and three other guys got garbage time.

Off the bench, Joey Van Zegeren got 18 minutes, Will Johnston had 13 and Marshall Wood got 22.

They combined for 14 points and eight boards. The most promising aspect was Wood's six rebounds.

But still, they played ETSU, not a school like Duke, UNC, Maryland or NC State, and the starters pulled 22, 27, 34 and 17 minutes. CJ Barksdale had the 17 and he had 4 fouls in that span - also problematic. They just have no margin for error.

In his 22 minutes, Cadarain Raines had three of his own.

Fouls every 4.25 and 5.6 minutes will be a real problem if it keeps up.

On the bright side, Tech shot 40% from three point range and had 19 assists overall. Jarrell Eddie, Robert Brown and Erick Green combined to shoot 18-35 for 54 points.

We're still thinking about Maryland's performance against Kentucky. They were so impressive we forgot to make fun of their ugly uniforms.

Here's a breakdown from the Baltimore Sun.  Color Gary Parrish impressed with Alex Len.

We missed this in Virginia's loss to George Mason: they fired up 21 threes(making eight). That's not the sort of high percentage play that Tony Bennett prefers.
