The coaches and media agree, something of an occasion in itself: N.C. State will finish first in the ACC this season.

We're not convinced they're right, but if the prediction comes true the achievement won't be unprecedented for the Wolfpack.
Just not in recent memory.
Both the media and coaches picked N.C. State first, Duke second, North Carolina third. History is most certainly on their side.
Again, just not recently. The last time the three Triangle schools were the ACC's top three finishers was 1991, more than two decades ago. That's the same season Duke won its first national championship.
Back in '91 the media predicted UNC would finish first. Duke did. N.C. State, picked tied for third, finished sixth.
The last time the Wolfpack finished first was 1989; they immediately lost to eighth seed Maryland in their ACC Tournament opener, then lost to Georgetown in the Sweet 16.
