There are a lot of heroic people in the world, but if you were picking someone to idolize, you could do a lot worse than Steven Hawking. The brilliant physicist has done some stunning work and ranks as a truly historical man.

As brilliant as his intellectual achievements are, and they surely are, his greatest physical achievement is to be diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease at 21 and nonetheless live to the age of 70.  It's a medical miracle which has benefited all of mankind.

Typically, Hawking says that while he's unraveled remarkable mysteries, the one he could never crack is simple: women.

We should all be grateful that he has lived as long as he has and given so much to humanity.  Happy birthday, Dr. Hawking, and we hope for many more.
