We were distressed to learn that Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans has passed away. We met her a few times, but not so that she would have remembered us.
She impressed us, as she would have impressed anyone, as an immensely gracious woman who was intensely loyal to her friends and institutions and causes which she supported.
She was a great friend to Duke, to the NC School of the Arts and many other institutions, and to a remarkable circle of friends as well.
We were fortunate enough to see her kindness when she kept careful track of an aging friend and provided great care and comfort to her in her final years.
With her passing, the spirit of Durham is greatly impoverished. Our condolences and very best wishes to her wonderful family.
