Georgia Tech followed an impressive loss to Duke with an impressive win over State: Georgia Tech handled State with relative ease.  Mark Gottfried basically said sometimes you stink and we stunk.  Fair enough. Everyone is entitled to a bad day.  In sports, you tend to get damned for it, unfairly or not.

Glen Rice, Jr. had 22 to lead five Yellow Jackets in double figures. CJ Leslie had 16 for State.

Meanwhile, up in College Park, Wake stunk the joint up for most of the game before closing at the end.  That was largely because while Wake stunk early, Maryland couldn't buy a bucket late.

Like Georgia Tech, Maryland has discovered a certain toughness.  It may or may not be permanent, but it certainly helped against Wake Forest.

Wake actually pulled to within three after trailing by 18.

Mark Turgeon benched Terrell Stoglin for an undisclosed disciplinary issue, saying that "I’m trying to make Terrell a man. There are responsibilities out of basketball you have to do. We’ll see if it helps him. It’s nothing major, but the kid needs to grow up."

He spent two minutes on Stoglin's manhood preparation before deciding he should get his butt in the game.  Maybe he's a fast learner.

Both teams can draw lessons: Maryland for losing intensity and then regaining it, and Wake for having the guts to come back. It fell short, but this would not have happened last year.  That's a good sign, we'd think.

By the way, Maryland and Tech play this weekend, which is suddenly more interesting than it seemed even a week ago.

On Thursday, Clemson visits BC, and while a week ago we'd have assumed a blowout, BC was impressive enough against UNC to raise some eyebrows.  They might be able to pull this off. Or not.
