Against the backdrop of Miami's woes and the possible pursuit of Florida State by the SEC, Maryland has problems of their own: despite being in a part of the country that has handled the economic roller coaster as well as any, the athletic department is losing money and may have to cut teams.
One answer: ramp up basketball and football. We think that Mark Turgeon has made his intent to upgrade the talent on the basketball team clear, and Randy Edsall is getting some early plaudits for his work with the football team as well. He seems to be made of sturdy stuff.
