Let's face it, Georgia Tech is a bit of a mess at the moment: aside from a new coach, they also have to play in rented arenas while the Thriller Dome is being turned into something else, the athletic budget is in shambles, and the football team just got hit by a major probation, a situation which lightly touched basketball as well.
So the question isn't so much why they didn't get a better coach than Brian Gregory as why would anyone take this job under these circumstances.
Gregory might turn out to be pretty good for the situation. He's a grinder, not a sprinter, and a hard worker. Tech will need that more than anything else.
