Gary Calling It Quits (Updated 8:01)

Gary Williams will retire after 22 years at Maryland. He will discuss his decision in a  Friday press conference.  Is it a coincidence that this came shortly after Jordan Williams announced he was staying in the draft?  Perhaps not - Gary might have decided that a rebuild and the subsequent criticism were more than he felt like dealing with.

The obvious question is: who will replace him? Well let's face it: as solid as he has been - and he's been very solid - Maryland has rarely come close to their potential.  Logically, given their location and their conference, they should be a Top 10 program year in and year out.

This job should attract very high-level attention.  We'll be really intrigued to see how it works out.

Here is a statement from Williams as relayed by the Washington Post:

“It’s the right time. My entire career has been an unbelievable blessing. I am fiercely proud of the program we have built here. I couldn’t have asked any more from my players, my assistant coaches, the great Maryland fans and this great university. Together, we did something very special here.”
