You know, when Jim Valvano died and everyone in his world swore to fight cancer, we figured it would be a passing thing, and for many people it was. But for Dick Vitale, it has become a consuming passion.
Like everyone we suspect, we have fun with Vitale once in awhile. But Andy Staples is right: the man has thrown himself into the fight and has never stopped. And anyone who raises $100 million is busting his butt. So yes, Dickie V, an easy man to lampoon or even ridicule has in this way risen to nobility and become, without question, a heroic figure.
