Fighting Sioux Put In An Impossible Spot

The North Dakota Fighting Sioux have a challenge: on the one hand, the NCAA in 2007 begin requiring programs which used Native American-based nicknames to change them or face sanctions (Florida State is allowed to stay the Seminoles because the Seminoles say they may, which is the one exception to the policy).

Things are a bit more difficult now that the state of North Dakota has required UND to continue using the name and logo they've used for decades.

We have no doubt that a vast majority of UND graduates would prefer to retain the nickname, but the university has been put into a very difficult position.  They cannot disobey the law, but the NCAA is not yielding.

A court-mandated resolution seems inevitable.
