According to Jeff Goodman, Dayton's Brian Gregory is "likely" to accept Georgia Tech's offer, and now he has accepted it.
By the way, while we knew that Dayton had had a couple of transfers, we didn't realize the extent of potential issues there.
It seems clear that this season, and post-season, were a bit of a train wreck, largely due to the circus surrounding transferred PG Juwan Staten and his father Billy. Both Staten and Spearman complained that they were being told to pass too much and felt restricted.
âIt just wasnât the right fit," Spearman told the Dayton Daily News earlier this month. "BG is a great coach. I got along with the coaching staff and players. But I want to have the ball in my hands. I want to set up other players. Iâm 6-3, but I know what I can do on the court.
âBasically, I couldnât show my ability. Itâs all about player development. You have to work on your game, but the coaches have to put you in situations to improve. I could work on my âhandleâ three hours a day, but Iâd get in the game and theyâd be yelling at me, âPass the ball.â
Oh, the horror.
Staten's dad was not as diplomatic.
- âJuwan trusted him. I trusted him. But once he showed me this year ... he played on his words. Heâd say, âWeâre going to get the ball in your hands and do this and do that.â He didnât say, âWeâre going to get the ball in your hands, but youâre going to pass it every time.â â
- âNobody wanted it to end like this. But when you recruit better kids, youâve got to adjust your philosophy to fit the kids youâve got there. But it was, âDonât do this, donât do that.â You start saying to yourself, âWhat am I?â
- âYou look at programs that have talent like Juwan, and they let them play. A lot of those teams are in the NCAA tournament.â
- âIn three [high school] years, we had no problem. BG ... well, Iâm not going into that. It is what it is. I think they know a lot, but I donât think they know it all. A lot of things are just common sense.â
Fair enough. It's probably also common sense that a kid who attends four schools in four years is having some issues, whatever the reason and whoever is at fault. You can sort of see why Gregory might not mind a change.
