The game was close until the end - just a one point lead for Vandy with 2:17 left.

Which would have been a perfect time to call a play for Scott Wood.

Unfortunately, Wood is out with an ankle injury.

Still, even though it's early, it would be hard to argue that State's not improved. They seem to be a different team.  Mark Gottfried is doing a nice job.

Is Tony Bennett channeling his dad?  Virginia only managed 49 points but held Drexel to just 35. That's right out of Wisconsin during the Dick Bennett era.  To an extent, Tony has tried to distance himself from his dad's reputation as a defensive whiz with no offensive panache, but games like this won't help.

Drexel was just 14-54.  Virginia hit just 14 shots as well, but out of 39, and outscored Drexel 18-4 from the line.

No doubt Bobby Cremins enjoyed beating old ACC rival Clemson.   Charleston led from wire to wire and did it at Clemson, too. Practice will not be fun on Sunday.

Not much to say about the Miami game - they beat North Florida and they should have.

On Sunday, Maryland gets Iona, UNC hosts Mississippi Valley State, FSU takes on South Alabama and Wake gets N.C. Central.

When there are tourneys in the islands, it's hard to get game times right.  We think Virginia is going to play Drake on Monday.

We usually stick to basketball here, but a couple of games are worth mentioning: Virginia's Mike London is doing well as we thought he might, and Virginia upset Florida State 14-13, at Florida State. Virginia is now 8-3.

And no one, even Tom O'Brien, can explain State's 37-13 win over #7 Clemson.

Meanwhile, up in College Park, Maryland has lost seven straight and even though it's his first year, the pressure is already on Randy Edsall.
