In Wednesday's only ACC game, Carolina flew down to Miami where they engaged the Hurricanes in a tense and interesting match.
Miami had their chances, but Harrison Barnes had two big shots late including the winning three and that was the end of it.
Barnes has begun to show an admirable instinct for the clutch, although he's still struggling with his shot.
Other than the two big shots he hit, Barnes managed just two baskets and finished 4-11. Still, there's no question it 's better to hit the shots you need than to fill your stat sheet.
Surprisingly, at least to us, Reggie Johnson outperformed Tyler Zeller and John Henson. Johnson finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds, eight of them offensive. Henson and Zeller combined for 17 points and 11 boards.
Arguably though, the difference was Dexter Strickland, who finished 6-7 from the floor for 12 points, grabbed four boards and also handed out four assists: one of his better games.
UNC is still in the hunt for first place, but Miami is in real trouble. At just 1-5 in the ACC, the Hurricanes will need a massive turnaround to make the tournament. it's not like they're lacking talent, so presumably the conversation will turn to other things.
Yep, yep, right on time.
Some good news for Virginia as Mike Scott has won a fifth year of eligibility after his injury problems this season.
He won't be able to help his team Thursday night as Maryland comes calling. Neither team is doing well offensively although Maryland has considerable bulk and athleticism up front. Virginia's hopes for the NCAA tournament are probably gone, but Maryland still has an outside shot. They will need to win games like this to do it.
