To a certain extent, many people regarded Bill Walton the broadcaster as a buffoon. That's not to dismiss his basketball knowledge or his place in the game, but he tended to come across as a bit of an odd duck.
However, when you learn just how much pain he has lived with and indeed played through, it's very difficult not to have a profound respect for the strength he possesses. Walton quite simply has lived through hell and at least for now has triumphed. This is a remarkable story and it's almost impossible not to cringe when you read about deeply the man has suffered.
