Coach K rightly focuses on team accomplishments rather than his own. Yet, he finishes this season with 868 wins. That puts him just 11 behind Dean Smith -- which should be roughly the end of December or so -- and makes it conceivable that he could pass mentor Bob Knight by the end of the season, although that could be pushing it since win #34 this season came against West Virginia.
That's probably not the ideal situation -- there's enough stress and tension in the Final Four without an epic record chase and all the distractions that would entail -- but still pretty amazing to think that that could happen next season.
It's also kind of fun to think that in April, he tied Adolph Rupp for second-most titles with four; in December or January will pass Smith for second place all-time wins and by the end of the season could pass Knight.
