Wow, this kind of escaped us - 145 years ago this month, Joseph E. Johnston surrendered to General William Tecumseh Sherman at Bennett Place. Before too long, Union soldiers, who had acquired a taste for the tobacco of the Piedmont, began to send orders once they had returned home. The Duke family and Durham soon began their rise, which of course led to Duke University.

The surrender took place, by the way, 12.5 miles from the future site of the Dean Dome and five miles from Cameron Indoor Stadium.
