We're not buying this statement by Maryland AD Debbie Yow: "And Gary is doing a magnificent job. Iâve said for years, this is not a new statement, I think heâs the best coach in the ACC. And as a basketball coach, I did this for a living, I was successful at it for a living, and I think I have some creditability in that area and heâs the best one. He is."
He's at best third-best behind Coach K and Roy Williams, and Tony Bennett will make his case later. If he were best, the fans wouldn't have tried to run him out of town last year.
We're not knocking him, he's a good coach, but certainly not the best. And given the legendarily cranky relationship between Yow and Williams, this is a silly assertion.
