At the beginning of the year, many fans were jarred by the canned introductions in Cameron. Michael Buffer has been a wonderful presence in boxing, but for most of us, our place never needed a false sense of excitement to crank things up. It's always had that.
One of the unsung heroes of Duke basketball is Art Chandler, who has been behind the microphone in Cameron for as long as most of us can remember. He's down to his last game -- he's retiring after this season and Carolina will be the last time he graces us with his presence, at least in his current capacity.
If you've ever been to a game where the announcer spends the entire time screaming to create atmosphere, you'll have a keen appreciation of just how good this guy has been. It's hard to imagine anyone else doing it. He is as much a part of the fiber of the place, of what Tom Wolfe called the colonial animal, as anyone.
