Odds are they'll be playing with no Wear (but some tear) as both twins are likely to still be sidelined with injuries. Travis has an ankle injury, and David's hip is anything but as most of you already know.
They join Ed Davis on the sideline as the world's tallest, and creakiest, cheerleaders.
It's certainly safe to say that the season has worn on the Tar Heels and the time for reflection may have have already arrived. Check out these quotes from WRAL.
Dexter Strickland:
âAt the beginning of the season we played like nobody could stop us. We judged teams on the way they looked and we didnât play to our full potential. We let one team knock us out, then everybody started knocking us out and we just lost confidence.â
John Henson:
âIntensity, effort and focus. Those are the three main words this team is missing. When talent is equal, thatâs what decides games⦠I just want to get back to the Carolina Way. Whatever it takes, weâre going to have to do. Make sacrifices and then everyone will prosper.â
Tyler Zeller:
âI donât know if all of my teammates realize what the North Carolina name means. [When teams] are playing North Carolina, theyâre going to come as prepared as possible. Theyâre going to get in extra shots that week. Theyâre going to come and be ready to play⦠So weâve just got to come out and weâve got to play harder and get after them even more.â
They have nothing on their coach. Roy Williams has said some astonishing things this season, many of which have come off like he's trying to assign or perhaps escape blame. Whatever's going on, he's clearly had just about enough.
Williams, who a couple of weeks ago bragged on his radio show about the lack of transfers during his career, now sounds like he wouldn't mind a few:
âIf the losses or something that happened this year make the kids not work as hard, then I recruited the wrong dadgum kids and they need to get the heck out of Dodge,â he told WRAL .
That's the way to build confidence!
With Wake Forest coming up, Carolina will need all the help they can get. The immediate problem will be Ish Smith, Wake's remarkably fast point guard. UNC really has no one to match up with him.
Now though, with all the injuries, they don't have anyone to match up with Al-Farouq Aminu either.
It's not a good idea to predict things in the ACC, but it sure looks good for Wake Forest and dark for UNC.
Maryland's trip to Blacksburg won't be easy, but the pressure is squarely on Virginia Tech. With a dreadful nonconference schedule and what could become a late slump, this game is absolutely critical for the Hokies. If they beat a very solid, near top 25 Maryland team, that obviously helps their case. Lose it and then people can say, well, they buckled against real competition and gorged themselves on cupcakes. They don't belong.
It's another chance to test our theory that Virginia Tech has no trouble getting up against fine teams like Maryland, but struggles against lesser teams like say Boston College.
And while we say Boston College is a lesser team, we are cognizant of their improvement. One hopes Georgia Tech is aware of it. Their play is so erratic however, it would be very hard to tell. If they blow this one, they might as well buy futures in soap because they're right back on the bubble.
State and Miami? Only true junkies would get into that one, so pass thepopcorn!
