Back in 1966, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was known as Lew Alcindor and was just beginning to show the world what he was capable of. Unfortunately, one of his earliest victims was Duke. SI has their original story posted in The Vault. Duke held young Alcindor to 19, but UCLA won, 88-54.
The writer, Joe Jares, made a remarkable prediction: that UCLA would go undefeated until the 1968 matchup with Houston, in the Astrodome, where they would play in front of the largest crowd in the history of college basketball. Totally accurate, and a transformative game for college basketball. Houston won, 71-69.
UCLA got the rematch, though, winning 101-69 in the Final Four before beating UNC for the title, 78-55.
