It's nice to see Mary Garber getting so much love and attention in light of her passing, but that's not to say that she didn't get it before. When an extraordinary person dies, though, praise naturally follows.
There is more from the Winston Salem paper, with comments from the widow of Clarence "Big House" Gaines and Billy Packer, among others. Packer has justly been criticized for his comments about women, but he no doubt had a bond with Garber since both of them realized that great basketball was being played at places like Winston-Salem State and other traditionally black schools around the state and nation, and surely they ran into each other in those gyms.
One of the more touching things to come out about her is that she and Gaines referred to each other as brother and sister.
