Vecsey On Mary Garber

The ACC is a great conference, don't get us wrong, but some of the character has gone out of it, or perhaps some of the characters is a better way to put it.

Think about who's gone: Lefty Driesell, Norm Sloan, Lou Bello, Bones McKinney, Jim Valvano, Bobby Cremins, among others.

One who doesn't get enough attention is Mary Garber, who was a first-rate reporter for the Winston-Salem Journal for decades. A tiny woman, she used to show up at games with a knit cap, and, sometimes, a footstool to stand on. George Vecsey has a fine column up about her at the Times.
