John Feinstein has an affectionate column up on Dick Vitale and what he's meant to college basketball. And you have to admit, when you think of truly great broadcasters, meaning guys who are truly originals, the line is pretty short: Al McGuire, Billy Packer, and arguably Jim Valvano, although obviously his career was cut short. There just aren't that many, and few have the overall decency of Vitale.
