Barry Jacobs On Road Warriors!

Note: the information for Georgia Tech was entered incorrectly in the first table. It has been corrected. The difficulty of winning on the road in the ACC is irrefutable. Last year road victories were so hard to come by, no team posted a winning league record away from home. That had not happened since 1990, two seasons prior to Florida State's addition to the ACC. An argument can be made that greater balance is evident in years when there are few road powers. Conversely, an argument can be mounted that, when few visitors prosper, it's because the ACC has few notable teams. Or, this may need more study. Extremes provide little illumination in reaching a definitive conclusion. In fact, the number of successful teams on hostile conference courts may have no bearing on the league's overall strength. Since 1990, only in 1993, 1995, 2001 and 2006 did three teams have winning ACC road records in the same year. ACC squads appeared in the Final Four in each of those seasons except 2006, when the pool of league members was a dozen. UNC won the NCAA title in '93, Duke in '01. Six times during the same span, either one or no teams posted winning marks as ACC visitors - 2007, 2003, 2000, 1994, 1991, and 1990. The conference sent teams to the Final Four in each of those seasons until the two most recent; Duke won the NCAA title in 1991. As for NCAA bids, the ACC saw less than half its membership invited in two of the four seasons it had a wealth of road victors (2001, 1993), and less than half invited in two of six years when it had virtually no road powers.

  • Since 1990, only Duke has gone undefeated on the road in ACC competition. The Blue Devils turned the trick in 1999 and 2000.
  • Duke and North Carolina are the only programs with more winning than losing seasons on the road in the ACC since 1990. The two have more winning records as ACC visitors over those 18 seasons than the remainder of the league combined: 18 to 14.
  • Clemson last had a winning record on hostile ACC courts in 1987, when it went 5-2, losing only at Duke and -- where else? -- North Carolina. The Tigers are 0-1 on the road this season after losing at Duke on Jan. 19.
