Saturday was a pretty entertaining game of ACC hoops, as State went to FSU and won a tight game, 69-66, and Virginia Tech also nabbed a road game at B.C., 81-73.
J.J. Hickson won the game for State as the rookie hit two big free throws and blocked a last-second attempt by Florida State, and it's fair now to ask if they've turned things around: after being humiliated at UNC and losing at Clemson, the Pack has seen the last three games go down to the wire and won two of them. They may or may not be out of the woods, but there's no question that they're playing better.
For Florida State, a team which looked like it might be ready to make a big leap, things are not going well. The Seminoles have fallen to 13-8. Injuries have definitely played a role, but this is a veteran team, and they have to win the close games.
For Virginia Tech, a very impressive win at B.C. They're in a rebuilding phase, and it's going pretty well. The game at B.C. went into overtime, and the young Hokies came through in fine fashion. Freshman Hank Thorn had nine points in overtime.
This is the last game of Jeff Allen's suspension, and that has actually had a bright side, since J.T. Thompson has played very, very well. As good as Allen has been, Thompson has made a case for his minutes, and it's not like he's done anything majorly stupid.
We knew Virginia's Ryan Pettinella had transferred in from Penn, but we didn't know his full story. Pretty interesting.
John Feinstein has a great article up about Bobby Cremins and how he really needed to return to coaching. The funniest part? This story of a friend calling him about the Charleston job:
"Hey Bobby, did you hear? Gregg Marshall just pulled a Bobby Cremins and went back to Winthrop. Maybe you should think about the job."
He's in basketball lingo forever.
