Barry Jacobs On Coaches & Birthdays!

Three active ACC men's basketball coaches celebrate their birthdays during the regular season: Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, N.C. State's Sidney Lowe, and Maryland's Gary Williams.

Coincidentally, this year Duke and Maryland, directed by the ACC's senior coaches, meet at Durham on February 13. That happens to be Krzyzewski's birthday. He will be 61. Williams will be 63 on March 4.

Krzyzewski's Duke teams are 4-4 on his birthdate.

Williams' Maryland teams are 1-1 on his birthday, and don't play on that date this season.

Lowe's first N.C. State team did not play on his 47th birthday last season. The Wolfpack is not scheduled to play on Jan. 21 this year, either.

Five of eight games played by Duke on Coach K's birthday came against Wake Forest, which won four of them under three different coaches. Krzyzewski is 1-2 on the road on Feb. 13, and 2-0 against nonconference opponents.

Maryland and Duke met once previously on the 13th of February -- the Blue Devils beat a Terrapin squad coached by Bob Wade in 1988 at Cole Field House.

Both Williams and Krzyzewski lost the overtime contests played on their birthdays.
