Support for Mike Nifong continues to crumble as Floyd McKissick, who is chair of the Durham Democratic Party, has jumped ship, saying that "[t]he African-American community of Durham wants fairness, and the view is that if Mr. Nifong was not fair in this case, whatâs he going to be like in other cases?â
This is precisely the point Jim Coleman has made and we have made several times ourselves, although less successfully: if a prosecutor can almost pull off trumped-up charges against people who are capable of defending themselves, what happens to the most vulnerable among us?
Michael Crump, also quoted in the Newsday article, says this: âThem behind Duke, they got money, and they did the right thing fighting back against what she said happened.â
