The ACC has long since gone corporate, but when it was just getting started, a lot of what made the league a success was just the sheer number of personalities. From coaches to referees like Lou Bello, larger than life characters dominated the conference and generated immense publicity and anticipation. Kudos to the N&O for bringing them up.
