Eddie Sutton has decided to retire and Mike
DeCourcy gives a somewhat restrained farewell after Sutton's
alcohol-fueled accident led him to the end. His son, Sean, will take over
at Oklahoma State.
Sutton leaves a mixed bag. One of the game's great teachers, he had the legendary triplets at Arkansas. Then he moved to Kentucky, where his career nearly ended after UK's terrible scandal.
He had a tremendous revival at Oklahoma State, and re-established himself as one of the best in the business, before his drunken accident. Alcohol has been a problem for Sutton before, and ultimately led to his downfall, two games before becoming one of the few coaches to record 800 games.
Incidentally, he was also considered at Duke, but the Devils picked a guy with a longer, harder name to pronounce.
