This story had been floating around for a few days, but we hadn't seen
confirmation of the rumor: according to WRAL, when the alleged rape victim
was asked to identify the lacrosse players she says raped her, the
police only used pictures of the lacrosse players. UNC professor Arnold
Loewy tells WRAL that "[t]hat's surely going to be suspect...First, it crosses
racial identification, which tends to lead to known improper guilty verdicts in
the past. Second, it was a case of somebody who apparently
couldn't identify the perpetrators initially."
In related news, District Attorney Mike Nifong has come in for some criticism from members of the legal profession for his performance thus far.
