Congratulations to Wake Forest, as
the Deacs are, stunningly, ACC Champs. That is something which was
unfathomable at the beginning of the season, when Wake wasn't even considered a
potential challenger. It also turns conventional wisdom on expansion
upside down. At the time, Wake was widely thought to have committed
athletic suicide. Apparently not. It should also give great hope to
Duke fans. If Wake can do that well, surely Duke can aspire to at least
playing .500 ball.

UNC managed Kentucky without too much trouble, but there was one interesting
note: for the second time in recent games, a team figured out how to
defend Tyler Hansbrough, holding UNC's remarkable big man to seven points and
three boards. Earlier, Gonzaga held him to nine and nine,
respectively. On the other hand, in both games Brandan Wright scored
well, so it's to an extent a question of picking your poison. But still,
last year there was no Wright and no one else really managed to stop Hansbrough.
Apparently the scouts have picked up some things.
Clemson thumped South Carolina, 74-53, and while Dave Odom is a good guy,
it's always a good day when an ACC team smacks the Gamecocks around.
Wake Forest just barely lost to Georgia, 87-86. And in the other
Saturday ACC game, B.C. held off Travis Ford's UMass (featuring UVa refugee Gary
Forbes, who scored 11) 84-73.
On Sunday, we have the first official ACC action, with Sidney Lowe taking his
team to UVa to help christen the John Paul Jones Arena, as least as far as ACC
play goes. Georgia Tech will also travel down to Miami.
In nonconference action, Virginia Tech gets GW and Maryland gets Notre Dame
in the BB&T Classic, and Florida State either gets a chance for a massive
upset or a chance to get nuked when they play FSU.
