Congressman Walter Jones
has become an unlikely champion of the three accused Duke lacrosse players.
In his letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, Jones asked for an
investigation into D.A. Mike Nifong's prosecution of the case, specifically
pointing to the procedurally flawed lineup and possibly prejudicial statements
by Nifong.
Jones represents the 3rd District, which is a coastal district a long ways
from Durham. But he says he's getting a lot of complaints from
constituents about the case and so he wrote his letter.
It would have been much better had he represented Durham. And he's a
bit of a headline hunter. But at least someone in a position of power has
pointed out the significant flaws in the case. And that's all to the good.
