KC Johnson returns to the Herald-Sun and the paper's coverage of the lacrosse
case and comes up with an interesting statistic:Â the subscriber's base is
down 10% since the lacrosse case began. Â
Of course, there's no way to know exactly why it is down, other than to assume that the general malaise of the industry in general brings most papers down. Well, not the N&O, which is adding subscribers, perhaps not coincidentally, as the Herald-Sun sheds them.
Add that to the weak position of the Herald-Sun when it was sold - arguably,
frog-marching loyal, decades-long employees out with
security-guard escorts the morning the sale went through was a way to defray
pension expenses and so on - and you have to wonder exactly what the paper's
finances look like.
