ACC Roundup

Two days, two weak performances by a team billed by some as the most talented
in the history of college basketball as UNC had to come back to beat
Winthrop.

Not exactly the stuff of legends, but the Heels are a very young team yet,
and like many, including Duke, their young players are learning lessons and
finding their way.

Still. It's a bit embarrassing to play like underachievers when you
have said such lofty things said about you. And while Winthrop has been
tough in recent years and demands respect, it would be bad for the conference if
the first two losses were to Vermont and Winthrop. Geez.

A big part of the reason why they pulled it out was Marcus Ginyard, who is
not shy on defense, and who probably nailed down a role for the foreseeable
future. Someone whose role is rapidly slipping away is Quentin Thomas, who
was described as upset by his minutes after the Sacred Heart game. Well,
he's probably really mad now, getting all of one minute against Winthrop.

Here's a little feature we'll run from time to time - looking at how Ol' Roy
is spreading the minutes.

UNC gets Gardner-Webb before reality sets in and Ohio State comes calling.

In the other ACC game Tuesday, Clemson beat Furman, but not by a whole
lot.

After their big game against Arizona, and with the beautiful new arena and so
on, Virginia
has to be feeling happy about the way things are going.
We'll see if they
can build on the momentum, but for now the future looks very bright.

Maryland has a big game tonight against St. John's, a team which has really
cranked up the defense under coach Norm Roberts. Maryland is focusing on
defense. This will be an interesting test.
