ACC Roundup

Wake has had a rough ACC season so far, and they
need to get under the hood and tinker some
. What they've done so far
hasn't worked. They have Georgia Tech coming in, and the Jackets are
building some confidence right about now. They had a four game winning
streak until State snapped it, but they gave State a game, too. Tech has
some young talent, and confidence is all they need to get things going.

We had been wondering what exactly Paul Hewitt apologized for in the State
game. Apparently he said, "hey, f*** you! That's classless!" to
a State kid who said, "hey Paul, do you think Tarver even understood those
drawings?" in reference to the academic woes of Theodis Tarver.

Now let's preface it by saying that anyone who makes it through three years
at Tech is, by definition, not a dummy. And let's also add that athletes,
who put it on the line in the most public of ways, often get a raw deal from
fans who are insensitive if not cruel.

But when you look at what a freshman said, and then what a grown, prominent
man says in response, well, who comes off worse? Good on Paul Hewitt for
apologizing, but come on.

We found this in
a column in the N.C. State Technician
, a response to Gregg Doyel's somewhat
silly comments about State fans and State academics.

Come to think of it, he's not the first coach to curse the State crowd: a few
years ago, State students e-mailed us and said that Gary Wiliams said "f***
you! that's five straight! F*** you!" As he ran off the court.

Virginia fans are pretty
happy with their team lately
, and certainly beating Virginia Tech is part of
that. Dave Leitao has established some credibility with them
