Jacobs On Coaches Playing Former Schools

Maryland’s defeat of Boston College in the Eagles’ ACC opener helped Gary Williams even his record against BC to 1-1. That was one of the few times this season, or any season, a current ACC coach faced a school at which he once directed the basketball program.

Both times Williams has faced Boston College at Maryland, he did not do so voluntarily. BC was the Terps’ opponent in the ACC-Big East Challenge during the 1990-91 season, and is now a league member placed permanently on the schedule.

ACC mandate similarly has forced Florida State’s Leonard Hamilton to take on Miami, a previous coaching perch. The teams will meet this season on Jan. 29 and March 5. FSU also played the Hurricanes in Hamilton’s first two seasons at Tallahassee, winning each time against squads coached by Perry Clark, the former Georgia Tech assistant. Last year, meeting as conference partners, Miami won twice under Frank Haith.

There are two nonconference nostalgia trips on tap for ACC coaches: BC and Al Skinner visit Rhode Island on Dec. 31, and Maryland hosts American, coached by former UVa player and coach Jeff Jones, on Dec. 23 in something of an ongoing series.

Oddly, Virginia Tech scheduled two of the three schools previously coached by Clemson’s Oliver Purnell, beating Radford in the season opener and visiting Old Dominion on Dec. 30. The Hokies also lost at Ohio State -- where Gary Williams once roamed the sidelines -- in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge.
