Georgia Tech 63 Florida State 60 Seeding Implications

Georgia Tech's win over Florida State forces a coin flip
in the Commissioners Office. Hey, John, start practicing using
that thumb!
Head to head results so far in the ACC:

read down Clemson Duke Florida State Georgia Tech Maryland North Carolina NC State Virginia Wake Forest
Clemson - 2-0 1-1 2-0 2-0 1-1 1-1 2-0 2-0
Duke 0-2 - 0-2 1-1 0-2 0-1 1-1 0-2 1-1
Florida State 1-1 2-0 - 1-1 1-1 1-1 2-0 1-1 1-1
Georgia Tech 0-2 1-1 1-1 - 0-2 1-1 2-0 1-1 1-1
Maryland 0-2 2-0 1-1 2-0 - 1-1 1-1 0-1 2-0
North Carolina 1-1 1-0 1-1 1-1 1-1 - 0-2 1-1 1-1
NC State 1-1 1-1 0-2 0-2 1-1 2-0 - 0-2 0-2
Virginia 0-2 2-0 1-1 1-1 1-0 1-1 2-0 - 1-1
Wake Forest 0-2 1-1 1-1 1-1 0-2 1-1 2-0 1-1 -

The tiebreaker rules:

When two teams are tied:

  1. head to head
  2. Record against the top team, then second, third, etc...
  3. Coin Flip

When three or more teams are tied:

  1. Head to head until reduced to two teams
  2. Record against the top team, then second, third, etc, until reduced to two teams
  3. Random Drawing

The win by Tech means Georgia Tech and Wake Forest are both 9-7, and
they were 1-1 against each other. The second tiebreaker is stepping down
the conference. Both were 1-1 against Duke, 0-2 against NC State,
1-1 against UNC, 2-0 against Maryland, 1-1 against Florida State,
and 2-0 against Virginia. So, the coin flip between the two must happen.

(You'd think there might be a better way, such as combined scores in
two games, which would give the tiebreaker to Georgia Tech by a
combined score of 149-146. At least it was decided on the court.)

The three way tie remains possible, depending on the UNC game.
If Carolina beats Duke, the three way tiebreaker applies. UNC, Tech,
and Wake are all 1-1 against each other, so we go to the second
tiebreaker. UNC, Tech, and Wake would all be 1-1 against Duke.
However, UNC is 2-0 against NC State, whereas Tech and Wake are
both 0-2. That separates UNC as the third seed.

Florida State is in jeopardy of falling back into the Les Robinson
Invitational, and Maryland has been spared that fate. The winner of
tomorrow's clash between Maryland and Virginia will end up the only
team with a 7-9 record, and therefore they will be the sixth seed.
The loser will be 6-10 with Florida State.

Maryland wins the tiebreaker
with Florida State because of their win over NC State. Florida State
wins the tiebreaker with Virginia under those circumstances because
Florida State would have a win against Maryland and Virginia would have
been swept.
