We thought it would be interesting to break down the stats between Duke and
UConn and see what might be gleaned. We tried to pair people logically,
but in the case of Redick/Denham/Anderson, we put three together, since they'll
likely have similar roles. We also matched bench players. Most of
this is meaningless, but we still thought it would be fun. Keep in mind that
UConn has played one more game, too.
Statistically, Okafor has a clear advantage over Shelden Williams in just
about everything except free throw shooting, three point attempts, fouls, and
steals, which are almost dead-even, and Williams has seven more turnovers.
Part of the discrepancy is that Williams played limited minutes in more than a
few games due to foul trouble. It would be interesting to see how much
closer the rest of the stats would be if those weren't so far apart.
As you might expect, Duke has a clear advantage here in the Deng-Boone
matchup.
In both the Redick and Ewing matchups, keep in mind that their early-season
stats were depressed by injury.
Duhon probably has the advantage overall in the point guard matchup - Brown
won't shoot threes (he's only attempted five all year), has significantly less
turnovers, half as many steals, but more assists and more offensive boards.
