After thinking about what Dave Bliss tried to do to a dead man for a day or
so, it hasn't really settled in. It's just unbelievably shocking, ugly,
disgraceful, you pick the word, it pretty much will work. from now on,
though, we'd like to suggest a simplification: everyone should just start
referring to him as "Dave Bliss, the bastard," or, if you prefer,
"the bastard Dave Bliss."
Among the links below, we'd like to call out for special attention Skip
Bayless. You may remember Bayless as the guy who ridiculed Notre Dame for
hiring Mike Brey, calling him "Vanilla Man," and suggesting that Notre
Dame had given up on basketball when they hired Brey. Now, equally
foolishly, he's suggesting that what has happened at Baylor could have happened
anywhere.
Well, the shoddy admissions, the overlooked drug use, the paying of players,
yeah, that could happen anywhere. But one teammate apparently murdering
another, that's something you don't see every day, and for a coach to then try to frame the
deceased as a drug dealer who dealt his poison to pay his tuition and who was
likely partly responsible for his own death - this guy is just unbelievably
obtuse and willfully stupid.
Bayless, not Dave Bliss, the bastard. What Bliss the bastard did
was wildly beyond the pale. He could be indicted for it, and we hope to
God Dennehy's parents sue him for every ill-gotten gain he possesses.
There's just no percentage in smearing dead people, much less kids who you asked
to be part of your team. There are a lot of bad things in college
basketball, but we're hard-pressed to come up with a close second to this one.
Likewise, after reading Bayless talk about how Bliss has integrity in some parts of his life, well, horse hockey, and if he does, so what? He
pretty much forfeited the right to any compassion anytime soon. It figures Skip Bayless would try and praise some part of Bliss, but there's no getting around what he tried to do. But it boggles the mind somewhat to see Bayless compartmentalizing discipline and integrity.
