Va. Politics & How Tech Pulled It Off

Here's a rundown on what happened politically in the Commonwealth of
Virginia to
muscle Virginia Tech into the ACC.
Most ACC people won't mind Tech
being in the conference, even though they were never in high demand, but the way
they got in may take a while to smooth over. Larry Sabato, the well-known
professor at Virginia, pretty much nails why Tech wasn't a big favorite to get
in: "{Gov. Mark] Warner was looking to a rural constituency, and Virginia
Tech supporters ... are disproportionately concentrated in the western, rural
half of Virginia. He strengthened his tenuous hold on rural voters."
