The Sure Thing Reconsidered

It's amazing, really, the propaganda that tells kids the NBA is a fool-proof,
guaranteed path to riches and happiness. It doesn't always work out, even
for the really, really good players. Just
ask Roy Tarpley,
because his life is a mess. This is the point where
people wish they had taken school more seriously, because when you're starting
over at 38, an education is invaluable. For that matter, a lot of sure
shots don't turn out to be so sure. Take
Brett Nelson,
for example, who will be learning Swedish this year.
