Say goodbye to the table at the left, and hello to our first conference
win in nearly four years. We've got the Duke links elsewhere, but one must acknowledge it was a strange weekend for ACC
football overall.
In Chapel Hill, Carolina ended their home losing streak
with a 42-34 win over Wake Forest. Wake's bowl hopes now rely on bearing
either Connecticut or Maryland. Fortunately for the Demon Deacons,
both games are at home, but UConn is no pushover, and neither is Maryland.
Even more surprising, Clemson got their first ACC win ever over Florida
State, in an old fashioned stomping, 26-10. Florida State is now out of
the NCAA championship picture, and still needs a win over NC State
to get a BCS bid. Clemson needs one more win to be bowl eligible, since
one of their wins is against Furman, a Division 1-AA school.
For the expansion teams, Miami, Virginia Tech, and Boston College
went 0-3. Both Miami and Virginia Tech are also out of the
national championship picture. Worse, if Pitt wins out, Miami and
VPI are out of the BCS bowl picture. To even be bowl eligible, BC needs
to beat with Rutgers or Virginia Tech, and both are road games.
