Coach K will be the guest speaker at a charity cocktail reception and dinner in Chicago for the Rory David Deutsch Foundation, on whose Board of Directors he serves. The event will be held on Friday, October 4th starting at 6:00pm at The Standard Club, 320 Plymouth Court.
The mission of the Foundation is to fund research in medical laboratories that study pediatric brain tumors and other devastating childhood diseases. The first priority is brain-stem gliomas, a particularly deadly form of brain tumor that, due to its location within the brain stem itself, makes it inaccessible via surgery and resistant to standard chemo and radiation.
The Foundation has already committed over $2 million to the Brain Tumor Center at Duke University (which, you may recall, was the subject of a lengthy feature on 60 Minutes earlier this summer).
The Foundation was established by Ross and Mindy Deutsch of Chicago, whose seven-year old son, died of a brian-stem tumor a few years ago. Since that time, they have devoted their entire lives to raise funds in memory of their son, Rory, to find new methods to combat these diseases. In addition to the funds for DukeÂs Brain Tumor Center, they have funded clinical trials that have already shown positive results.
We often run announcements about charity events, but we want you to know that we know Ross and Mindy personally. Without question, they are two of the most caring, inspiring, and generous people we have ever met or will ever meet. These people are absolute angels. Neither are Duke grads, but they have developed a real love affair for Duke and many people in the Duke community and the feeling is mutual. We really hope that if your schedule and location permits, you can attend the dinner.
The price for the reception and dinner is $500 per person. YouÂll have a photo opportunity with Coach K, receive an autographed copy of his book, and receive a Âbag full of delightful surprises. Most of all youÂll have the chance to make a difference in medical research while mingling and enjoying fellowship with some remarkable people.
If you are interested, please e-mail us, and weÂll make sure you get an invitation. We hope to see you there!
