Indiana coach Mike Davis has been suspended by the Big Ten for one game, against Ball State. Davis's punishment stands out in clear contrast to the punishment meted out against Joe Paterno for chasing down and grabbing a referee after a loss to Iowa, and later grabbing a referee during the Ohio State game. Contrast Davis's apology with Joe Paterno's apology: Hanging a referee doll by the neck on his front door.
We don't think Davis's actions were commendable, and we would fully endorse any punishment meted out by Indiana or the NCAA. We just feel that the Big Ten's inconsistent application of the rules is unjust.
