Duke Grad Crash Davis Dies

We're sad to report that Lawrence "Crash" Davis passed away on Friday. He was 82. We heard about a month ago that Davis had a recurrence of stomach cancer and had declined any heroic measures to extend his life. Crash graduated from Duke in 1940 and maintained close ties to the school and was a huge fan of Duke athletics throughout his life. Crash, although best known as the namesake of Kevin Costner's character in Bull Durham, had a terrific baseball career at Duke and then went on to play for Connie Mack's Philadelphia A's and then in the Carolina League after serving in World War II. Known for his kindness and energy, he will be missed by many, including his Duke family of friends.
