Beard, U.S. Roll

Alana Beard and the Junior World Championship Team have started off
well, beating Lithuania 89-71 and China 84-52. In the first game, Alana led
the team with 18 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. Monique
Curry played just three minutes and didn't score while Wynter Whitley
didn't play. Against China, Beard was in foul trouble for most of the
first half but managed to score all 10 of her points in the third
quarter. She still tied for the lead in assists with 4. Curry had 2
points and a 1 board while Whitley had 1 point and 2 rebounds in limited
action.

The US plays Brazil (a team they defeated twice in that DC
invitational) today, plays overmatched Mali on Wednesday and Russia on
Thursday. Medal games are July 21 and 22nd.

Incidentally, one of the starters on the team, Ann Strother, is a
rising senior and one of the most coveted recruits in the country. Duke
is one of many schools she's interested in. Stay tuned!
