Coming to town next are the Demon Deacons of
Wake Forest. Always a rugged team under Dave Odom, the rivalry goes back for
decades. Like most of the ACC rivalries, it is steeped in lore and mythology,
from the Bones McKinney seatbelt era (he used to strap himself in so as not to
get technicals), to the Billy Packer years, when Packer supposedly played angry
because Duke had not recruited him, to the Rod Griffin vs. Gene Banks
championship and on into the K-Odom era, it's had some periodic classics.
In the last decade or so, Wake has had a lot of
success against Duke, first with Rodney Rogers, then with Childress and
Duncan. The games have been poetic at times.
After a long stretch of success by Wake, Duke
bounced back and has dominated the Deacs since Tim Duncan left.
This game is the first Top 10 clash between the
two teams we can remember, so that's very exciting. Wake is a very tough team
this year, and this should be a great game, and a chance for both teams to
find out what they're made of.
