In a long anticipated letter, athletic director Joe Alleva informed all season ticket holders that starting next year, ticket prices for games at Cameron would be scaled. Historically, all seats at Cameron were priced the same regardless of location, a trait that is fairly unique among entertainment venues.
The impetus for this decision largely has been the need to free up prime seats for new major donors to the University. It is hoped that people who have been grandfathered in to choice seats will voluntarily move to less expensive seats.
Interestingly, as a result of the ticket price scaling, ticket prices will be reduced for most ticketholders, although overall revenues will be increased.
When he asked a task force to look at the seating situation in Cameron, Alleva set forth three principles:
First, make no changes in student seating. As Alleva stated in his letter, "We win with our 2,500 students sitting around the court, and we won't give up that advantage."
Second, honor the allocation commitment to faculty and staff for 2,100 seats.
Third, continue basing seat assignments on Iron Duke giving levels and cumulative athletic gifts.
