"When I left coaching 22
years ago, my mother called me and said, 'Alfie' - that's what they called
me growing up - and she said, 'I'm so pleased you're leaving clean.' I
thought that was the greatest compliment.

"You gotta remember, we're bar people. Saloon-area world. What my
mother was saying in our language was that they weren't hanging you in
effigy. There's no pulling and pushing and arguing and suing each other.

"If she were around today, I think she'd call and say probably the same
thing."
